The original ‘smiley’ was created by commercial artist Harvey Ball in 1963. Concerned about the commercialization of the iconic graphic, Harvey established Smile Day, which encourages you to participate in acts of kindness and to smile and make others smile. Since that first World Smile Day® in 1999, it continues every year in Smiley’s hometown of Worcester, MA and around the world.
Harvey Ball, and his creation.
On World Smile Day® the theme is “Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile!”.
Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts created the smiley facein 1963. That image went on to become the most recognized symbol of good will and cheer on the planet. As the years passed, Harvey became concerned about the over-commercialization of his symbol.
Out of that concern came his idea for World Smile Day®. He thought that each of us should devote (at least) one day each year to smiles and kind acts. He declared that the first Friday in October each year would henceforth be World Smile Day®.
We challenge each of you to Smile today. We practice what we preach here at the Smile Factory. Check us out and remember, be kind and SMILE!
