April Fools, April Smiles!

“April 1.  This is the day upon which we are reminded of what we are on the other three hundred and sixty-four.” –Mark Twain

Spaghetti really DOES grow on trees! :-O

Spaghetti really DOES grow on trees! :-O

April Fools’ pranks have been around for a very long time! Following is a CLASSIC April Fools’ joke played on TV viewers in England.

In 1957, a British news program managed to convince hundreds of people that spaghetti could grow on trees.

Oh yes they did…listen to THIS:                                                                                        Prior to April 1st, the BBC program,Panorama, went to Switzerland to film a segment about the great spaghetti harvest, which was made possible by the “virtual disappearance of the spaghetti weevil.” They placed cooked spaghetti on tree branches and filmed local girls “harvesting” the pasta.spaghetti

_40980449_spag238After airing the segment, the station was bombarded with phone calls asking how to grow a spaghetti tree.(?!?) Before the broadcast ended for the night, the anchors confessed to the prank. Genius!maxresdefaultMaybe it wasn’t on an international scale like the BBC, but have YOU ever pranked someone with a clever April Fool’s joke? Let us know!1441397_10151996968753641_1635680114_n

Waffles for Everyone!

March 25 is INTERNATIONAL WAFFLE DAY. Waffle Day began in Sweden as Våffeldagen; this day historically marks the beginning of spring and is celebrated by the eating of many waffles.SOH Waffle 2

This remarkable dough-based gridded cake can be eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner, snack or dessert.

Take this day to explore the variety that the world of the waffle has to offer you:  topped with fried chicken or stacked and drenched in sugary maple syrup, dusted with confectioner’s sugar or coated in chocolate or cream…yum!

A Few Waffle Fun Facts:

SOH Waffles* The word “waffle” is from the Dutch, meaning “wafer.”

* In the late 1800’s, Thomas Jefferson returned from France with a waffle iron.

* Eggo Waffles were introduced in supermarket freezer sections in 1953.

* Since its founding in 1955, the Waffle House chain has sold more than 500 million waffles.

Have fun. Raise money. Cure childhood cancer. —St. Baldrick’s Foundation

St. Baldrick's!

St. Baldrick’s Foundation

Worldwide, 175,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year. And in the U.S., more children die of childhood cancer than any other disease—more than AIDS, asthma, cystic fibrosis, congenital anomalies and diabetes combined.

2013 – John Ivanowski and Mark Borella celebrate their newly shaved heads with big SMILES!

Why the shaved heads? Volunteers shave because kids with cancer often lose their hair during treatment, and they stand proudly bald beside them. “Shavees” sign up on the website, collect money from friends and family and show up at an event to take their turn in the barber’s chair.

It’s fun, it’s emotional, and it’s for a crucially important cause.  Every St. Baldrick’s event needs a strong volunteer committee. Get registered.

Seeds of Happiness offers a special St. Baldrick’s Seed. The cost is $10 of which, we donate $9 to The St. Baldrick’s Foundation. During the past year we have raised almost $600 for childhood cancer research.
